Western Carolina University Museum

RE + constructed
June 7-Aug. 3, 2012
Reception 5-7pm Thursday, June 7
Carolyn Nelson; Elon, N.C.
Heidi Field-Alvarez; Henrico, Va.
Jen Swearington; Asheville, N.C.
Jeana Eve Kelin; Boone, N.C.
“RE+ constructed” brings together the artwork of Heidi Field-Alvarez, Jen Swearington, Carolyn Nelson and Jeana Eve Klein, four artists who explore the connection between cloth, history and narrative. Their works technically are quilts – sandwiched layers of fabric and filling bound with stitches – but break from traditional notions of quilting. The works in this exhibition represent a variety of materials and process including recycled fabric, paint, dye, digital printing, screen printing and hand- and machine-stitching to name a few.
A common thread that runs through the exhibition is the way in which these artists use fabric to tell a story. Whether a childhood memory, a legend, a dream or a tall tale, it is told through the manipulation of cloth.
MAIN ART
GALLERY
The X Gallery - "Still Falling" an outdoor public art installation
Main Art's X Gallery is a unique concept in Richmond. This nine by eleven foot exterior space proposes to remove the formality of the viewing experience without diminishing the quality of the exhibited work. Each large scale work will be displayed for a period of only 3 months. Artists must choose to accept the challenges of working in an unusual space, offering work to broader public view as well as acknowledging ephemeral and environmental limitations. Inasmuch as the works are not-for-sale, the creative impulse of the artist centers on creating art for art's sake; at the same time enhancing and enriching Richmond's urban environment.
